TORONTO, July 8 (UPI) -- Screening men for prostate cancer using the standard PSA test, even before they show symptoms, reduces the risk of developing the fatal form of the disease by 35 percent, Canadian researchers report.
"This study contributes to the debate over the value of PSA screening in an important way because it offers new evidence that screening with PSA can reduce the risk of death from prostate cancer," Dr. Jacek Kopec, associate professor of healthcare and epidemiology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, told United Press International.
Kopec and his co-investigator, Dr. Vivek Goel, professor of health policy management and provost of the University of Toronto, conducted their research in the Toronto metropolitan area. Between 1999 and 2002 they surveyed 236 men with advanced metastatic prostate cancer and a control group of 462 men without the disease.
As reported in the August issue of the Journal of Urology, they matched the subjects according to age and residence and compared lifestyle information, medical histories and histories of health-service use, including PSA screening.
PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen, the substance in the blood that can indicate the presence of prostate cancer.
Kopec and Goel found that the risk of developing metastatic prostate cancer was significantly reduced among the men who had been PSA-screened compared to those who had not -- there was a 35-percent reduction among those who were screened.
The reduced risk appeared to hold for men under and over age 60, though the benefit of screening appeared to be somewhat stronger in younger men.
"As with most cancer screening tests, screening for prostate cancer is believed to confer greater benefit not from a one-time testing approach,abercrombie & fitch outlet, but primarily through a program of screening; thus screening is recommended to be performed annually," Dr. Durado Brooks, director of the Prostate Cancer Program at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, told UPI. "It is not clear from the (study) manuscript how many of the cases or controls actually underwent regular screening and at what intervals."
Kopec noted that the study was limited, because many of the men received only one PSA test.
"While our study should not be considered definitive,Supra Vaider, it provides the strongest evidence yet that screening of asymptomatic men with PSA is effective,Accessories," Goel told UPI.
Among North American men, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer death -- often because the disease metastasizes to other parts of the body.

I Won't Forget Him
In my memory, I will never efface the image of a common service worker.
It was last New Year when all my family members gathered together that suddenly the heating pipe broke up. The warm steam burst forth from the crack. We could do nothing but have a shot at calling the household management center. Fortunately, someone answered it and decided to send a person here.
Ten minutes later, a middle-aged man came. He quickly shut the valve, but one of his hand was hurt by a spine carelessly. Not having a rest,gucci shoes online outlet he replaced the broken pipe. It took him half an hour to finish replacing it. Only after that did he remember his injured hand.
In our thankful sight, he disappeared in the curtain of night. He must have been getting together with his family, but he did the job for the sake fo others' convenience at this special night. What a nice man! I will never forget him.
