A rescued dog can finally see again after he was so severely neglected he became trapped in a filthy ball of his own matted hair - weighing two stone.Floyd, an Old English Sheepdog, was picked up by an animal charity after he was bundled out of a van and left tied up with a piece of string on the street. His dirty hair was so long and matted that he struggled to see, hear or go to the toilet and his claw-like nails made it painful for him to walk. Neglect: Emma Midgley with Floyd, the Old English Sheepdog, when he arrived at an animal charity after suffering severe neglect. He struggled to see, hear and go to the toiletBut he is now recovering after vets performed a two hour operation to shave off two stone of matted hair and clip his two-inch long nails.Wendy Kruger, from Wood Green, the animal charity which rescued Floyd, said whoever was responsible for his condition were 'criminal'.More...Reunited! He couldn't see, women north face sale, hear, go to the toilet or walk properly.'Now he has had his hair cut he has got his senses back and is rediscovering the world.'He is 10 years-old and we don't think he has ever been groomed in his life. My youngest Old English Sheepdog has a tail whilst my older ones do not. It is only now that I can fully appreciate how much they depend on their tails. It is a continuation of the spine and is of huge benefit to balance, movement and expression. In my experience dogs MUST keep their tails for "hygiene purposes". The are able to lift their tails out of the way - as opposed to a stump which they cannot leaver and as a result often gets in the way.- Rebecca, UK,north face outlet sale, 30/8/2011 19:47Click to rateRating155Report abuseWhat type of hardened heart can watch an animal suffer like that?- liz, Liverpool, 30/8/2011 19:42Click to rateRating231Report abuseIm glad this dog was found as is now living a better life. Obviously someone owned this dog and has severly neglegted him. This is why a law should be brought in that dogs need to be microchipped and licenced so that its owners can be traced. Here in Ontario in the region I live in all dogs and cats must be licencend on a yearly basis you dont have to get you animal micro chipped but if you do you can get a lifetime licence for $20, and we have a guy that comes around on a yearly basis and will check to see you have the correct paperwork and licences for your pets. Of course neglect can and still will happen everywhere because people see cute puppies and dont do any research as to the kind of dog this puppy will grow up to be and how to look after it properly and then they get fed up with careing for it properly and so the neglect starts then it all becomes too much and they have to get rid of or abandone the animal somewhere! - Colette, Bowmanville. I'd love to bring him home with me but I already have a rescue dog and a rescue cat. One more thing though - whatever TerenceH says no dog needs to be docked for hygiene reasons. Dogs use their tails for balance when they are moving, for assistance with stopping and for signalling to other dogs and people - they are not, or shouldn't be, mere adornment which we can chop off if we so desire. Occasionally some dogs will need some 'cleaning up' (accidents will happen) but this does not mean docking is a good idea or fair to the dog. I'd hate to think of poor Floyd coming through all of this for someone to inflict more unnecessary pain on him.- Bee Sting, Newcastle, 30/8/2011 19:15Click to rateRating122Report abuseHuman beings never cease to amaze me in how they can neglect, hurt and kill other things and still sleep at night. Hideous person who did this. Lets hope Floyd has some quality of life now, all he deserves after this treatment.- Cas,north face jackets sale, A Very Broken Britain., 30/8/2011 18:56Click to rateRating181Report abuseThe views expressed in the contents above are those of our users and do not necessarily reflect the views of MailOnline. We are no longer accepting comments on this article.
